Can Suryakumar Yadav be India’s all time captain? Although Suryakumar Yadav (SKY) has many qualities that makes him a stronger contestant to become a captain but it is hard to answer that he has confirm ticket of all time captaincy for Team India.
Things that are in the favor of Surya are-
1. Talent and potential- Surya is currently a best T20 batsman in India and in the world as well. He is consistently scoring runs with quite good strike rate. He has so much power and elegance in his batting. He has ability to bat at any position and can also play in any situation. This makes him a valuable asset for the team.
2. 360° scoring ability- Very few players in the world has the ability to score in all sides of the ground. SKY has the ability to play 360° shots all along the ground. He has a strong zone in Third man area to score runs quickly.
3. Leadership qualities- Suryakumar Yadav has shown his captaincy skills on and off the field. He helped India to win the series against Australia in November. And now India has also tied a series against South Africa in the south African conditions. It shows his leadership qualities and due to these qualities Indian team can think of making him the captain in T20 format in future.
4.Experience- He has experience of more than 200 matches in T20 format. He has a deep understanding of the format and has a good tactics in captaincy. He sometimes makes very crucial decisions in tough situations.
5.Age- At the age of 33, he is at prime of his career and also has many years of T20 cricket left in him. This could ensure his long term stability and allow him to build a strong team culture. This can lead BCCI to think about his full time captaincy.
Things that are not in favor of Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy
1.Limited captaincy in International cricket- Although he has shown his beautiful leadership in the T20 format, but he has never captained India In major Tournaments which can raise the questions about his ability to handle pressure in big games.
2.Power centered batting- Some argument maybe arise that his batting is over shadowing his leadership responsibilities. Captain need to prioritize the team’s performance over his individual achievements.
3.Others captaincy contestants- There are also worthy contestants in the list of captaincy. Players like Hardik Pandya and Rishabh pant has also the ability to claim this opportunity.
So Surya is exceptionally a talented and experience player with potential leadership qualities. But he can face competition from the other emerging players for the seat of captaincy. Ultimately, the decision of making a full time Indian captain rests in hand of BCCI selectors.
